Wickets and dismissals on the scorecard

A wicket on the scoreboard usually records a batter being dismissed. Most innings can lose ten wickets before ending because the last batter cannot bat alone. The dismissal line beneath a batter’s name helps explain how the wicket fell. Caught, bowled and leg before wicket are familiar examples, while run outs involve different fielding circumstances.

A batter shown as not out has not been dismissed in that innings. Wickets are also recorded in the bowling table, but not every team wicket is credited to a bowler. That is why a bowling team’s total credited wickets can differ from the batting team’s wickets lost. To follow a chase, combine the wickets remaining with runs needed and balls remaining; a single statistic does not capture every part of the situation.
