Current run rate and required run rate

Current run rate measures the pace of runs already scored. For a standard six-ball over, divide runs by legal balls bowled and multiply by six. Required run rate answers a different question: how quickly must the chasing team score in the legal balls remaining? It uses runs still needed to reach the target, rather than the runs already made.

A side can have a healthy current rate and still need to accelerate if the target is high. Wickets in hand also matter, but neither rate is a winning probability. Rain interruptions and revised targets can change the chase, so always read the provider’s target and match status rather than reconstructing a target from the first innings total alone.
